To Do or Not To Do...The First Look that Is
Why a First Look can the best part of the Big Day
“Out with the old and in with the new!” - and we’re not talking about your New Year's resolution, we’re talking about your Big Day! A lot of brides are looking for new and creative ideas, and are moving away from the traditional wedding day. One of the most popular new trends is the First Look; however, there are still those that stay true to tradition believing the first look should be down the aisle.
What you need to know:
This special moment can help those with high anxiety calm their nerves. That initial walk down the aisle can (and has) caused a great deal of anxiety for many, so by allowing yourselves some time together beforehand can alleviates a lot of stress.
The First Look can allow you both more time with your guests - it cuts down tremendously on the time in between the ceremony and reception, therefore allowing you to enjoy more time relaxing with the wedding party, or use the Cocktail Hour you invested in.
It allows for some incredible photos and videos! Not only of the moment have itself, but it also allows for more time for formal photos of the two of you.
My original feelings on the situation
I will admit, when it came time for my own wedding, I was entirely opposed to the idea. Tradition rang loudly in my ears and I was deadset on making sure we were keeping with the usual progression of a wedding day. I had looked through so many wedding photos in preparation for the big day, but the ones that always struck a chord with me were of the significant others walking towards each other for the first time down the aisle, and that reaction - oh, the reaction! (Cue the waterworks from the audience...)
Change of heart
It wasn't until we sat down with our photographer that a decision was made. We had created a timeline, and realized all of the photos we wanted to accomplish just were not realistic in the time frame we had. After realizing this, and weighing the pros and cons, we realized this idea was SO SMART. By taking these photos earlier in the day, we were able to (spend quality time?) with each other before the walk down the aisle, which eased both of our nerves, allowed for adorable photos that are now treasured keepsakes (and some of my favourites!), and provided us a chance to mingle with our guests during the cocktail hour.
Now it’s up to you!
Many things play into making this decision - traditions, family and friends, and timing, but always keep in mind your values and beliefs. Just remember, the day is about you and your partner - do what is best for you!
